BVIs are back! Day trip to Jost van Dyke

Oh, how we missed it. The beautiful beaches of White Bay, the Painkillers at legendary Soggy Dollar Bar, hell, even the customs stop for check-in. Well, almost 3 years later, the regulations that made it pretty much impossible for USVI based boats to head over have been removed and we are taking bookings again starting January 1st. We do anticipate to re-open a little earlier, mid-December.

Trip von St. John to Jost van Dyke

Our comfortable 32ft Powerboat with twin Yamaha 300s and cushioned, forward-facing seating will take you to visit beautiful White Bay on Jost van Dyke, we can stop at Sandy Cay or Sandy Spit, B-Line and then hang out at Soggy Dollar Bar, Hendo’s Hideout and all the other legendary bars in White Bay.

New Bar on Jost van Dyke, BVI: Hendo’s Hideout

There is a new bar on Jost van Dyke, right next to Soggy Dollar bar and it is quickly becoming a favorite. It is a beautiful wooden structure. The majority of the timber used during construction is reclaimed, as they strive to be as eco-friendly as possible. The wood, known as Cumaru, was sourced from a lake in Nicaragua, where it was lifted up by scuba divers. They have a beautiful bar and large, comfortable dining area.

While Soggy Dollar is the place to drink at party, Hendo’s Hideout is a great place to have a meal in a comfortable, relaxing setting so it is a great addition to the dining options on Jost that were a bit limited or more on the “fast food” side. Their head chef Paul used to work at the Westin St. John so you can see how that adds some sophistication to the menu.

stjohn-to-jost-charter-boat

Hendo’s Hideout is run and owned by Aaron Henderson (nick-named “Hendo”)  and his wife Liz. Hendo is a USVI native and former hedge fund manager in New York whose parents own and operate Top of the Baths restaurant on Virgin Gorda.

It has so far received very good reviews on tripadvisor:

“Impressed!”  *****

“Great addition to White Bay. Beautiful bar and dining area. Can’t wait to visit again. The owners are truly wonderful people. See you soon”

“Fantastic lunch and drinks!” *****

“We just had a wonderful lunch at Hendo’s about 20 minutes ago. The staff was great, as well as the food and drinks. The place is immaculate. What a fabulous addition to white bay!”

“A REAL Restaurant/Bar on White Bay!” *****

“What a place! Great food, service, and location. It’s new and unknown for now, but won’t be for long. We walked right up and ordered drinks, unlike Soggy where it’s packed & crazy (which is ok). My wife had the chicken, I had the burger – awesome! The bar area, facilities, and little gift shop are all new & perfect. I wish this happy couple (owners) lots of good fortune & success. I see no reason why it won’t be “The place to be” on this beach.”

Eat, Drink, and Relax here – you can’t go wrong.

Island by Island Overview

Jost van Dyke, BVI (closest to St. John)

day-trip-stjohn-jost-van-dyke

Named for an early Dutch settler and former pirate, rugged scenery and colorful folklore make up Jost Van Dyke.  With fewer than 300 inhabitants, it measures just four miles by three. It retains the island culture that much of the Caribbean has lost. Jost Van Dyke is a little island with a big reputation. It is also home of the Soggy Dollar Bar, the bar that invented the famous Painkiller Cocktail.

If you only want to visit one island, Jost has it all. White Bay is one of the best beaches in the world, Soggy Dollar always makes it on the top 10 beach bar lists and there are a more bars, restaurants and shops to roam around. A day trip from Jost van Dyke.

Norman Island, BVI

pirates-bight-norman-island-bvi

Norman Island sits East of St. John and just seven miles south of Tortola at the southern tip of the British Virgin Islands. It is 2.5 miles long with a total land mass of only 600 acres and feels like it is a million miles from anywhere. It is one of a number of islands reputed to be the inspiration for Robert Louis Stevenson’s pirate novel Treasure Island.

After Jost van Dyke it is second closest to St. John. While there is not much to see on the island itself, Norman Island is home to Pirate’s Bight (Pictured above), infamous floating Bar Willy T. and some of the best BVI snorkeling spots (Indians, Caves, Aquarium etc.)

Cooper Island, BVI

cooper-island-bvi

Cooper Island sits East of Norman Island and is home of Cooper Island Beach Club. It is a more upscale and relaxed setting vs. for example Soggy Dollar bar and the food is just great. There is also some good snorkeling. It’s not a place where you want to spend the whole day but it is great for a relaxed lunch or afternoon.

Virgin Gorda

the-baths-virgin-gorda-powerboat-charter-paddleboarding

Virgin Gorda is the third-largest (after Tortola and Anegada) and second most populous of the British Virgin Islands (BVI). Christopher Columbus is said to have named the island “The Fat Virgin”, because the island’s profile on the horizon looks like a fat woman lying on her side. It is a bit of a longer, more expensive ride from St. John.

The Baths are Virgin Gorda’s most famous attraction. They are a sublime jumbled collection of sky-high granite boulders. The rocks are made of volcanic java from about 70million years ago and form a series of grottoes that fill with water and shafts of kaleidoscopic sunlight and look truly otherworldly.

Peter Island

peter-island-day-trip-stjohn

is home to Peter Island Resort & Spa, a casually elegant British Virgin Island resort and spa hidden away on an 1,800-acre oasis of tranquility. It is a great place to spend some romantic couple time before heading to Jost van Dyke to end the day with some painkillers.

Anegada

sup-charter-stjohn-powerboat

Anegada is the northernmost of the British Virgin Islands and a much longer ride. It lies approximately 15 miles (24 km) north of Virgin Gorda. Anegada is formed from coral and limestone, rather than being of volcanic origin. While the other islands are mountainous, Anegada is flat and low. It is the only all-coral atoll in the VI and a mere 28 feet above sea level. That’s the place where we ourselves go to relax, it is so small, quiet and laid back.

Going to Anegada for a day can be a bit of a stretch (depending on ocean and due to customs hours), you might consider doing a customs overnight trip to truly have time to explore it’s beauty

B-Line Beach Bar – Day Trip St. John – Jost van Dyke

A day trip St. John – Jost van Dyke on our 32 FS Regulator Powerboat can be so much more than just Soggy Dollar. We can for example stop at B-Line at Little Jost van Dyke. It is a charming, low-key bar, that has great drinks, friendly staff on a beautiful beach.

day-trip-stjohn-jost-van-dyke-b-line

B-Line Beach Bar – Little Jost van Dyke

Their signature drink is the “Passion Confusion” is a mix between a painkiller and a rum punch, with lots of rum soaked pineapple, stop by and try one!

b-line-beach-bar-little-jost-van-dyke-bvi

They are open from 10am-10pm daily serving ice cold beer and rum drinks. On weekends they serve up the freshest locally caught mahi, tuna, and wahoo. Hot off the grill items include fish tacos, spicy tuna wrap, veggie burgers, kosher beef hot dogs, and their signature dish fish n foil. You can check out their website here.

b-line-beach-bar-play-cornhole

You won’t get bored. You can play cornhole, board games and there also is great snorkeling on the reef that is right around the corner. Oh and don’t forget to leave your name on the wooden roof of the bar. Feeling lazy? They also have a soft white sand beach for laying around and doing nothing at all.

b-line-bar-jost-van-dyke

From there we can head over to Sandy Spit for your personal perfect postcard shot. After a lot of erosion what is left of Sandy Spit is tiny, so make sure you visit it before it is gone!

sandy-spit-corona-island-bvi

From there we can head to the bubbly pools and then our last stop usually is White Bay, Jost van Dyke. Tired of the Burgers at Soggy Dollar Bar? Try out the other places: One Love, Jewel’s and Getrude’s have really great meals.

Sandy Spit

Another great stop on your powerboat charter to Jost van Dyke is Sandy Spit. A tiny unihabited Cay like Sandy Cay, surrounded by a picture perfect, 360° white sand beach, boaters and visitors from all over the world love sun bathing, excellent snorkeling, picnics and watersports there. Naturally as unihabited cays go, there is no dock, so prepare to get wet and swim to shore.

UPDATE: Since this article was posted, a lot of the beach has been eroded. So go and visit Sandy Cay while it is still there.

powerboat-charter-stjohn-sandy-spit-corona-island

The sun always shines on this tiny little island. It lights up the Caribbean Sea like a lighthouse. The picture-perfect tiny little island has a few rocks, green vegetation and two lonely coconut palms, you will not find much shade, so bring a hat or sunbrella. If you are lucky, you might have Sandy Spit to yourself for a few wonderful hours.

Activities on Sandy Spit

It will only take a few minutes to walk around Sandy Spit – if you walk slowly (it measures less than half and acre in size)! Other than that, you can go paddleboarding and it is also very popular with kite surfers, it can get a really nice wind. On calm days you will also find great snorkeling there.

Sandy Spit Island BVI

Where does the name Sandy Spit come from?

It is said to come from the fact that it is in spitting distance of Jost van Dyke. It is of course also in spitting distance to Sandy Cay (in the West). To the East you can see Tortola, and to the west you can see Little Jost Van Dyke and Jost Van Dyke. Sandy Spit is also know as

“Corona Island”

Sandy Spit in the BVIs is often also dubbed “Corona Island”, some of the famous Corona Beer Commercials are said to have been filmed there. Well, we really love the “Dump your cellphone” one, but if we did that, we could not answer your call to book a powerboat charter to Sandy Spit 🙂

Day Trip St. John – Virgin Gorda – Jost (video)

Here are some photos and a video from this weeks powerboat charter trip  St. John – Virgin Gorda – Jost van Dyke. It was quite a rough day with 5ft swell at 10seconds and 25knots of headwind, but the guests were happy and head a great time. We left Cruz Bay at 9:00 AM, passing beautiful Stade Amsterdam and checked into the customs at Tortola Westend. We pulled out of Soper’s Hole but were hitting some hard waves on the North Shore, so Captain Tyler decided to the take the route South of Tortola which was more comfortable.

day-trip-stjohn-virgin-gorda-jost

Arriving at Virgin Gorda we went straight to the word famous Baths, first having some drinks on board, then going for a swim to the shore and a hike around the boulders. From there we went straight to Jost van Dyke to finish off the day with painkillers at Soggy Dollar Bar. Check out the video below.

Taking our Charter boat to Jost van Dyke

The day trip to Jost van Dyke (BVI) is our most popular Charter Trip but when we have a day or two off, we also very much like going there ourselves on our Powerboat! Here are the photos of a recent trip. We had 2 days off, the weather forecast was good and we decided to spend the night there on the boat, anchored in White Bay,  under a make-shift tarp we made from a hammock. This also gave us some time to play around with the night lights, we put in a new control unit and got the color change to work. We took plenty of food in our cooler and cooked dinner on the boat with our small gas stove and had breakfast at Soggy Dollar Bar the next morning.
