Robinson Crusoe feeling on Sandy Cay
Sandy Cay is one of those islands that you picture in the brochures. Small. Deserted. Uninhabited. Only reachable by boat. It has a nice sandy beach on the southern side, a small pond in the middle. It is part of the BVIs and located between Tortola and Jost Van Dyke. Sandy Cay boasts pristine white sand and has totally amazing snorkeling.
The rocks on the island have a greenish color from copper ore deposits. It measures less than a half an acre in size, and consists entirely of a ring of sandy beach surrounding light foliage. It has the appearance of a classic paradise “desert island” and has been photographed for use in print medium in a number of advertising campaigns. If you are lucky you might have the whole island to yourself as the honeymoon couple pictured above which we took out. Yes, you will need a passport because it is BVI. No, there is no customs office, we will have to stop and check in at Great Harbour on Jost van Dyke. Sandy Cay is a possible stop on our Jost van Dyke Day trip, and we usually head to White Bay / Soggy Dollar Bar for some food and drink from there.
Prepare to get wet!
The shorebreak at Sandy Cay is usually rough, so we cannot pull up right on the beach but pull the boat up as close as we can so you have to swim in and then the captain will moor the boat on a mooring ball and wait for you.
Paddleboard Downwinder from Sandy Cay to White Bay
Are you a paddleboarder? Then you might want to jump off the boat on Sandy Cay and paddle to White Bay, it is a perfect downwinder (will take about an hour!)
